Getting back into DJing - thoughts on XDJ-RX3 and file mgmt

I used to DJ with CDJ-800s when they came out in 2003… Absolutely loved it. Mostly parties and a few bar/small club gigs. Mucking about on them in our shared flat most evenings…

Then around 2010 I sold them off, and a few years later got into music production, and starting buying Elektron and other gear. Still loving the production side, but what with life getting very busy / limited free time, and just missing DJing, I’m keen to get back into it. I got a smaller DJ controller, but having to find/charge my home laptop to use it is a downer… Also basic features are missing on the controller I got.

So I’m eyeing the XDJ-RX3, as a standalone unit. It seems to tick the boxes wrt functionality/reliability/price point.

Now, my question is about file management and the ‘immediacy’ of this ‘standalone’ unit. I had initially thought I could just dump my MP3 folder structure onto a usb stick, and off you go… Instant access to all my music! But I understand now you have to prepare tracks in Rekordbox. My home laptop is 4 years old, and I think has only USB 2… Transferring files takes ages. Also there seems to be something about having to work with ‘playlists’ rather than just a ‘native folder structure’ of the USB.

My context is that I have small kids, and very little time, so really just wanted to minimize any prep time in front of a laptop screen… Granted I could also get a new laptop, but the thing works well for regular work, so was hoping to avoid that…

I know this is not a Dj forum, but I have a lot of respect for the 'Nauts collective wisdom on many things, including this topic  Thanks in advance for your 2c.
