Prophet 6 (keys) versus Prophet 5/10 keybed

Hi friends!

Sooooo who doesn’t want the most majestic instrument of them all, the prophet 10 keys? I do!

First world problems, cause I already own the Prophet 6 (keys) and a prophet 10 (module).

So i was wondering, would it make sense to switch to a prophet 10 keys and prophet 6 module haha!

One of the main reasons for me would be the 5 octave keyboard.

One thing i wonder: They are both fatar keybeds; anyone played both a prophet 6 keys and a prophet 10 keys? is the feel of the keybed different? or is the only real difference the 5 vs 4 octaves? Thanks in advance!

You need to be real sure… the keys are the same, the 10 doesn’t have octave switching, so you have to use the oscillators for the pitch… so either five octaves to play or four octaves with quick octave switching. Obviously the ten had much bigger better feeling knobs and is absolutely massive in comparison too…
I love both but stuck with the six, size is much more important to me and I need the octave switching for external midi.

yeah i read about the octacve switching that is a bummer indeed. If the keys are exactly the same, then i’m not so sure about the benefits of the p10. especially since i already have the module. I mean it looks nice, but its BIG, and not even sure if the bigger knobs are such a benefit, they are so big, that it feels strange in comparison to my other synths

Octave switching being absent was definitely a big oversight. There is a master transpose setting in globals, not practical. However, you can reinstate the functionality with a MIDI helper device when local is switched off. Oscillator transposition may not yield the same result depending on the sound. Personally, I love JMK’s Plexus 4 (routing, merging, polychain, filtering, etc. ;-)) but there are certainly some helpers that can be powered on MIDI power alone.

The most compelling argument may be the size and weight of the rev 4. Plus its wood makes it more fragile for transport. So in a way the Prophet 6 keyboard is more practical, while the Prophet 10 keyboard is more beautiful.

Another point to consider is whether or not pgm change transmission can be switched off on the P10. I can’t remember because I own the P10 module but if it did not have such a global setting, you’d need a MIDI filter to get rid of it (eg rk002, etc).

exactly the dilemma

whats the issue here? i don’t understand, what if that cant be set off?

One thing I do absolutely prefer about the P5/P10 keyboard is that it has an additional Local Control Off setting that keeps the panel active. The P6 keyboard disconnects everything, which I found to be a pain when using it as a master keyboard.

I agree about the octave switching though. As beautiful as my P5 rev4 is, with hindsight I should have stuck with the P6.

The issue being: if you change a preset on your P10 connected to another synth’s MIDI in, the latter will change patches as well unless it has pgm change receive off setting or a MIDI filter (eg rk002) filters the message. Of course, this is not all evil but oftentimes you don’t want this to happen.

Let’s throw in few objective points into the equation to make it harder:

  • The P10 module operates at higher temperature given the smaller casing it resides in, so perhaps the P10 key version will live longer, all other things being kept constant.

  • The P10 key version weighs 14 kg, which is 5 kg more than your P6 and 10 kg more than your P10 module. That’s a hefty delta for your back.

  • The price difference of the P10 keyboard to your P10 module is +1000 bucks IF you manage to sell off your module at official sales price, which you won’t as long it is in production. It is more likely going to be +1500 bucks, at which point you could practically acquire an Oberheim TEO 5 instead.

so either way, you want both? quite a lot of overlap there. I could see keeping both so you could gig the P6 (more convenient since smaller and has efx) but want the extra voices from the P10 in the studio. but both for studio use…? what are you getting from each that justifies keeping both?

keys-wise… it’s the same keybed, so feels great on both.
