Analog Heat +FX Is this normal?

Hi Elektronauts,

I just bought a brand new Analog Heat +FX unit. I’ve noticed a few things, and I just want your opinion on whether these are normal behaviours.

  1. The navigation knob isn’t smooth when cycling through the options; it clicks.

  2. All buttons permanently glow red, with the exception of the on buttons, which are much brighter. I have not seen any other unit in YouTube clips or other examples with permanently glowing red buttons.

  3. The character button jumps sporadically when turned clockwise or anti-clockwise. This is super annoying and happens a lot.

  4. The unit gets super hot quickly. But I imagine this is completely normal.

Here’s a YouTube clip which illustrates my concerns. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

1 - normal behaviour

2 - I have to check tonight

3 - I never experienced this on mine.

4 - normal behaviour for a warming unit ^^

…apart from point three, so far so good…

If you want peace of mind, open a support ticket on the Elektron site and post your findings and video. They will know best.

Hi Enthalpi,

Thanks for the reply. The light thing seems weird, and the jumpy dial is annoying and shouldn’t happen.
If you could check your unit to compare, that would be great.

Cheers

Hi Reeloy,

Thanks for the reply.
Are all your buttons permanately lit up like mine?

Cheers

Hi Zac,

Thanks for the advice. I’ve gone ahead and initiated a ticket. I just wanted to hear from other users in the forum to get a better idea. I’m a completely new Elektron user.

Cheers

Yes, only the third point is odd, never experienced that

3 happens to me, i ain’t fussed, it’s not too difficult if you take it slow and it’s a rarely used dial once set - unlike all others - imho

it can also be a software thing btw, so the best plan is to try fast slow and test it out in TEST Mode from the Startup Menu - as it’s probably a real encoder unlike the other non pot types (with finite rotation) it might be a good idea to give it some cycles around to ease it in if it’s factory fresh

it’s so rare and inconsequential i don’t mind, but i can see it could be concerning - don’t rule out a software fix, but Elektron can advise on all of this

Hi Handed,

Thanksd for the reply. 3 out of 4 isn’t bad.

Hi Avantronica,

I’ve tried to ignore it, but sadly I can’t. Your advice is great, I hadn’t thought of that. I have heard that it could be a software bug rather than a dodgy unit. So I’ll try Test mode and report back.

Cheers

I’ve just run the unit through the Test mode cycle. It comes up with 0 issues! great news.

The character dial didn’t show any skipping issues, so you were right! It well must be a bug issue. It’s funny, though, as I would expect other owners would also experience this.

Thanks again.

Cool … You still need to speak with support but at least you have other ways to test it outside the firmware running

I’m just waiting for them to reply. Thanks again!

I recently had issue no.3 going on with encoders on a different hardware unit. Thought the encoder had gone bad and was worried because the manufacturer said they don’t think the part is available anymore. Turns out it was jus some static buildup. Spent a few minutes turning it vigorously and it sorted itself out.

Edit: whoops, meant to reply to OP. My bad

No. 3 happens to me very rarely. It was more often when it was new. I gave it a few rough spins and i feel like it helped a bit.

Everything else is normal.

Thanks Dr.K

I’ll give that a go. Perhaps it just needs to bed in a little.

Hi @SoundToucher,

How’s the situation with the character knob skipping steps when turned after a while?

I’ve just bought a fresh Heat +FX unit and it jumps +1, +2 or even +3 from time to time. Wondering if I should just give it a bit of time to break-in or the issue actually didn’t disappear with time on yours?

Hey Toomek,

Yes, sadly it won’t fix itself. It’s actually a hardware problem. I know this because Elektron has confirmed this plus, if you boot it up in standalone (not sure the exact name) mode (see manual) it doesn’t actually do it.

It’s really annoying and shouldn’t happen so I feel your pain. It’s weird how not everyone experiences this issue.

Cheers

Thanks so much for a super quick response!

You said hardware but I’ve just got a response from Elektron that it’s a known software issue that they will hopefully fix in the next update.
Did you get info from Elektron that it’s a hardware problem?

It’s actually my second Heat within two weeks as the one I’ve sent back to the shop had exactly the same issue and they were ok to change the unit. So 2 out of 2 I’ve got have the skipping issue. Not cool
