Zoom LiveTrak L6

Yeah, this looks like an answer to the question “what if TX-6, but practical.”

Which is not to say the TX-6 is strictly impractical, but quarter-inch jacks, a size that’s smaller than a compact mixer but also not smaller than an iPhone from 2012, and a price that’s closer to a Volca than an Octatrak… Seems like Zoom hit some sweet spots with this.

Does the main on-device record function capture stereo or multitrack audio to the SD card?

I think it’s good. How does one opt to select/play other recorded audio file(s) not just the most recent and I think Zoom missed the opportunity to use RGB LEDs, for example, PAN could be blue LEVEL could be green, etc. This helps visually but currently, it looked like a sea of pinkish red LEDs.

BATTERY POWERED!

Finally a company makes a true portable mixer/recorder. This is an instant buy

If only those TS connections on the back could have been balanced TRS connections.
It’s so close to being a perfect small form-factor mixer, but I’m sick of dealing with noise and ground loop issues.

Looks like there is a setting in the app to switch from recording master output or multitrack.

The prospect of recording multitrack audio - including a combination of physical inputs and USB audio returns (looks like the last two stereo channels can be used this way with e.g. an iPad connected) - to an SD card is pretty compelling.

FINALLY. Our begging and pleading for any company to do something like this has been heard. FFS, that wasn’t so hard, now, was it? I hope this kicks off portable affordable mixers for the synthers because the podcasters have had it all handed to them on silver platters for years now. This looks excellent and is long overdue. I’m cautiously optimistic and looking forward to seeing how this stacks up once it’s out in the wild.

I think this is going to sell like hotcakes to the synth crowd.

Where do I find out more about the eurorack adapter?

Yeah… Just saw this, this could be close enough to the thing I was searching for so long that I jump.
But 100%, the connectors are oversized for it’s use case.

Stuff that’s unclear/I hope for:

can it do multi track as an audio interface?
Can it play back the multitrack recordings and live manipulate them?
Can we on the fly adapt start/end point of the 4 “sound” pads?

It has midi… It has encoders for all functions…
Please please please have or add automation. I don’t expect it to add LFOs or side chain or something like that, but cc automation for EQ and PAN would be awesome.

The usb connector in the front panel puzzles me

Usb app to display all current settings, simply to have a better overview)

Oh, can it do CV? That would be a great plus. (Recording and mixing CV I mean)

And I’m curious where the limit is for those “pads”, if they are limited to a length.

Stuff that is to late but understandable:

No faders, it’s because of the size, but it’s easy to play multiple faders, not so easy to play multiple encoders…but understandable. If it would support midi automation on the other hand… (mapping a midi controller to features you need could expand the use of this box by a lot, while still having it be compact when needed)

A screen to view concrete values, brows projects (scenes and maybe loading samples into the 4 slots, playing back older recordings, midi mappings in the future if they support/add that)

But over all: damn, not only would it be a great on the go mixer, it would also replace my 2 slightly bigger boxes on my desk (audio interface, passive switch) for my monitors making it easier to just use synths over the speakers.

In true Zoom fashion, I truly hope we get a product family out of this one. With bigger siblings. Zoom’s take on the BigSIX or the Tascams could be huge.
But the meantime, wow. What a seducing capable box.

It is already one, just the others aren’t as compact:

At least the l8 is also battery powered

Honestly, if it’s midi controlled (pan, etc) and the sound pads are not limited (mono, time, …) and it can play back recordings (while manipulating them) I’m more then happy to pay 300€ for this, I could scrap my wishlist for components to make one myself.

Form factor and features looks great, this might be just what I’ve been looking for. Waiting for more details (especially considering multichannel features) and hoping it’s not coated in that rubbery stuff that usually gets all sticky in a few years.

Hopefully they learned their lesson with the H5 etc, if not then I won’t buy one either, that rubber crap needs to be banned.

That looks really cool. I translated the manual from the japanese site using google tranlator.

Ha! I was just about to post that.

A quick look through the manual it seems that recording can be either multitrack or master. All tracks available over USB.

You can record directly to the pads and be used as one shot, loop or hold. And they can be MIDI CC mapped.

Assignable CC parameters include EQ, Aux, Pan , Mute, Level, FX type and Compressor on/off.

Here is the support page in Japanese if anyone is interested.

3 hour runtime on AA power is definitely less than ideal though.

3 h on full blast (recording 10 channels + master, phantom power) seems more then fair, can do much more if you have a power bank to power it to.

That would be 1-2 full live sets. Do people expect to mix a while festival afternoon?

Damn, all parameters (even level) can be midi CC controlled. If you have this and a digitakt you can simply automate the whole mixer for a set…

I think people underestimate how powerful this thing is if you pare it with stuff. It opens up date type automation. Damn, even the frequency of the mid EQ is automatable for a sweep.

The Effects are not fixed, they have 2 parameters each in the software (could not figure out if you could automate those).
Pads have no time / quality limitation.

2 misses: playback just plays back the last master recording, so you can’t "re"mix the last multi track recording.
I’m not sure if the played samples/one shots are recorded anywhere.
And I’m not sure if it can be in usb host mode for midi controllers.

But man, I was dreaming about something like this.
I’m selling some gear for this.

It looks like it. Check the manual under “L6 folder and file structure” page 70-71.
