UC33e in 2024 / Mapping the dinosaur

Hi!
So, after years of it being stocked in a closet, I’ve taken out my old (& faulty) uc33e, took it apart, gave it a good internal clean and it now works like a charm (actually quite surprised of how unkillable this machine seems to be).

I’ve always liked this machine, in a way I feel it was quite ahead of it’s time with the midi + usb connection, multiple midi pages presets etc …

I really wanted to try and edit it’s mapping to make it fit in a dawless set-up. However running a recent macbook the old and discontinued enigma software obviously won’t run, & I wouldn’t even know where to start with virtual machines and such to run it.

However I keep seeing some videos of set ps where it’s still there standing, and I was wondering if anyone had tips to edit the map of this oldie ?

Cheers,

In the past I’ve seen Florian from bad gear use this controller pretty extensively. There are a couple of videos featuring midi set up and implementation using that controller with specific pieces of gear.

While there may or may not be anything useful in these (or some of his other) videos featuring the UC33e, he seems like a pretty reasonable guy and I’d bet if you reached out and briefly explained what you’re after, he might be willing to give you some thoughts.

Also a few various posts on this forum about that controller when I put UC33 in the search, so possibly some information there.

etc etc.

So, if you have time, take a look in the search for useful info. It’s a cool controller and I think it’s worth revisiting.

good luck.

Thanks for the ressources & the tips ! In the meantime I’ve also found the “deep dive” user manual with quite a lot of mapping infos, for anyone that might be looking for the same stuff : UC-33e Advanced User Manual : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive

There might be a step or two missing from the available documentation which makes the process of mapping controllers and storing / recalling presets confusing.

I recommend you to sit down for half an hour and figure out the steps and write them down. Otherwise you might loose your programming.

I have a UC16, same family.
And if I remember correctly every mapping can be done using the controller itself.
Don’t remember if there is a battery or just a non volatile memory. It’s been 20 years since I have changed it’s mapping

thanks  indeed what I did, took me quite some time to understand the step by step process but once I’ve figured it out it actually seems pretty logical !

@yoyz2k no battery on the uc33e, it’s usb powered or you can power it with a 9v generic plug !

yeah, logical, not intuitive though. really write it down, you might not remember next time

Best midi controller I’ve ever owned. I’ve had mine for about 20 years and I’ve never plugged a usb cable into it. Maybe there’s a bunch of stuff it does that I’m unaware of but it’s always been pretty easy to map from the front panel. In recent years it’s been paired to my evolver exclusively. When I first got it I just pressed buttons and turned knobs until it made sense.

It is really easy to configure from the front panel, but the Enigma software is pretty handy for being to able to quickly plan out how you want to lay the controls out in a logical way and quickly edit/re-edit the settings.

I was on the hunt for the Enigma software myself recently and finally stumbled across the final Mac and Windows installers a few days ago. In the interests of preserving them for posterity I’ve set up a UC33 Users Group on Facebook and uploaded them, plus a printable template for the front panel (to make your own overlays) to the files section. If I make any controller patches for it I’ll upload the .syx files there too. Anyone’s welcome to use or add to the resources there - just search UC33 on Facebook and you’ll find it.

Can I suggest you upload them to archive.org instead of f***book please

I kept mine for 10 years without using it as an object in my living room. After 10 years I connected it to my digitakt, very happy but in 2 weeks it was broken

Whats broken ? Because mine used to send parasite signals, but it can easily be opened, and after a thourough clean it works like a charm !
