It was only natural that Carmen would follow in the footsteps of her great family legacy\, being the daughter of legendary trumpeter/ composer Bobby Bradford and world-renowned vocalist/composer Melba Joyce. Her grandfather Melvin Moore sang with Lucky Millender and Dizzy Gillespie’s Big Band in the 1940s\, in addition to singing with the Ink Spots\, making Carmen the third generation of incredible musicians. She has carved out a place in music history for herself and is playing an integral role in this uniquely American art form called jazz. Carmen Bradford is Jazz Royalty. \nCarmen was discovered and hired by William “Count” Basie and was the featured vocalist in the legendary Count Basie Orchestra for nine years. She has since performed and/or recorded with: Wynton Marsalis\, Shelly Berg\, and John Clayton\, along with the Clayton Hamilton Orchestra\, Nancy Wilson\, Doc Severinsen\, Tony Bennett\, James Brown\, Patti Austin\, Byron Stripling\, Dori Caymmi\, George Benson\, Lena Horne\, Frank Sinatra\, Joe Williams\, DIVA Jazz Orchestra\, the National Symphony\, Rochester Philharmonic\, Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra\, Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra\, the Dani Felber Big Band\, Dallas Symphony\, Oklahoma Symphony\, Vancouver Philharmonic\, and countless artists around the world. Carmen performed on two Grammy Award-winning albums with the Basie band in the 1980s\, and later collaborated on a third Grammy Award-winning album\, “Big Boss Band\,” with guitarist George Benson in 1991. Her soulful voice warmed the hearts of Americans through the celebrated performance of the classic duet\, “How Do You Keep The Music Playing?” on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson that same year. \nCarmen’s 2015 release\, John Mills’ “Invisible Design” featuring Carmen Bradford\, is another example of Carmen Bradford’s ability to sing all forms of jazz\, be it straight ahead jazz\, blues or jazz fusion\, and swing it like nobody can. A first for Carmen was the 2015 release of the legendary Count Basie Orchestra Christmas album directed by Scotty Barnhart\, titled ”A Very Swingin’ Basie Christmas” on Concord Records\, with Johnny Mathis\, Carmen Bradford\, and Ledisi. \nIn 2016\, Carmen Bradford was asked by South African trumpeter Darren English to be a part of his new critically acclaimed CD “Imagination Nation” on Hot Shoe Records. Whether it’s a duo concert with Shelly Berg\, Big Band with the ladies of DIVA\, or her new favorite – performing with symphony orchestras around the world – Carmen Bradford’s body of work reflects a vast depth of musical experience and technical brilliance. She is also recognized for the overwhelming passion she brings to the lyric. \nCarmen Bradford’s love of teaching has been recognized by the San Francisco Conservatory of Music as the new Roots\, Jazz\, and American Music (RJAM) Program has welcomed her with open arms. Carmen is the resident Professor of Jazz Voice\, and Director of Vocal Jazz Studies. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row] URL:https://bpo.org/event/first-ladies-of-song/ LOCATION:Kleinhans Music Hall\, 3 Symphony Circle\, Buffalo\, NY\, 14201\, United States CATEGORIES:2023-2024 season,2023-24 Pops Series ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/png:https://bpo.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/23031-Web-Box-2324-PopsB9.png GEO:42.9024987;-78.881739 X-APPLE-STRUCTURED-LOCATION;VALUE=URI;X-ADDRESS=Kleinhans Music Hall 3 Symphony Circle Buffalo NY 14201 United States;X-APPLE-RADIUS=500;X-TITLE=3 Symphony Circle:geo:-78.881739,42.9024987 END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20240308T193000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20240308T193000 DTSTAMP:20240423T094011 CREATED:20230417T171315Z LAST-MODIFIED:20240205T154504Z UID:35964-1709926200-1709926200@bpo.org SUMMARY:The Music of Phil Collins & Genesis DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]From In the Air Tonight to Against All Odds\, and Turn It On Again to Invisible Touch\, Phil Collins has been responsible for some of the most cherished musical moments of 70’s to the present day. Handpicked by Billy Joel to star in Movin’ Out\, Cavanaugh evokes a style rivaling the Piano Man. He appeared as the lead role of the show for three years with over 1\,200 performances and received multiple accolades. The show culminated in 2003 with both Grammy and Tony award nominations. \nMichael began playing music at age seven\, when his parents bought their first piano. Encouraged by family and friends and inspired by his hero Billy Joel\, Michael formed his first band at age 10 and began playing local functions\, fine-tuning the craft that would become his chosen career. His first full-time gig as a musician was an extended engagement in Orlando\, Florida at a piano bar called Blazing Pianos. In January of 1999\, Michael received an offer that would unknowingly change his life: an opportunity to play Las Vegas at the famed New York\, New York Hotel and Casino. It was there that Billy Joel spotted Michael and joined him on stage one fateful night of February 2001. It only took two songs before Billy was convinced that he had found his new Piano Man: Michael Cavanaugh. Michael closed up shop at New York\, New York and moved to New York City to work alongside Billy Joel and Twyla Tharp to shape the Broadway musical that would be called Movin’ Out. \nWith the close of Movin’ Out at the end of 2005\, Michael began touring worldwide in his own right\, creating a show that reinterprets the modern pop/rock songbook known as The Music of Billy Joel and Elton John. Michael soon became one of the hottest artists in the private events market\, and continues to perform worldwide. His tours consist of company and charity events\, performing arts centers\, as well as sporting events including many PGA Tour events\, the Super Bowl\, and the Indy 500. His interpretation of the modern rock/pop songbook led to Billboard calling him “The New Voice of the American Rock and Roll Songbook\,” and he was recognized by Reuters as Entertainer of the Year for the private events market. \nIt wasn’t long before symphony orchestras discovered Michael’s talents and audience appeal. He accepted his first orchestral booking\, “Michael Cavanaugh – The Songs of Billy Joel and More\,” which debuted in April 2008 with the Indianapolis Symphony and continues to tour today. In October 2008\, he signed with Warner/ADA to distribute his first CD\, In Color. In June 2010\, Michael debuted his second symphony show in the Generations of Rock series titled “Michael Cavanaugh: The Songs of Elton John and More\,” and then debuted his third symphony show\, “Singers and Songwriters: The Music of Paul Simon\, Neil Diamond and James Taylor\,” in 2012. In 2015\, he debuted his fourth symphony show\, “Rockin’ Christmas with the Pops.” He continues to tour all four symphony productions\, along with performing with his band in performing arts centers and other public venues. \nThe Way I Hear It\, his second commercial album\, was released in April 2017. It debuted at #17 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. Recently\, Michael Cavanaugh reached the POLLSTAR Live75 – the top 75 active touring acts in the country – for both his symphony and performing arts center shows. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row] URL:https://bpo.org/event/elton-john/ LOCATION:Kleinhans Music Hall\, 3 Symphony Circle\, Buffalo\, NY\, 14201\, United States CATEGORIES:2023-2024 season,2023-24 Pops Series ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/png:https://bpo.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/23031-Web-Box-2324-PopsB8.png GEO:42.9024987;-78.881739 X-APPLE-STRUCTURED-LOCATION;VALUE=URI;X-ADDRESS=Kleinhans Music Hall 3 Symphony Circle Buffalo NY 14201 United States;X-APPLE-RADIUS=500;X-TITLE=3 Symphony Circle:geo:-78.881739,42.9024987 END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20240222T193000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20240222T193000 DTSTAMP:20240423T094011 CREATED:20231023T174404Z LAST-MODIFIED:20231117T162911Z UID:38734-1708630200-1708630200@bpo.org SUMMARY:Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone™ in Concert DESCRIPTION:Relive the film that started it all. After his passing\, Myers learned she was the fifth woman and last Cantor to be recorded in studio with Cantor Sobol. In 1996\, Myers earned a B.A. in music (voice) from Buffalo State University\, where she was a soprano soloist with the Chamber Ensemble’s central European tour. She continued her education at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, earning a Master of Arts in Teaching Music Education in 1999. \nIt was Cantor Myers’ devotion to her faith and desire to keep Jewish musical traditions alive that led her to study under Cantor Benjamin Maissner in Toronto\, earning her Hazzan (Hebrew for ‘Cantor’) credential from the Cantors Assembly. During the pandemic Cantor Myers began studying for the Rabbinate\, and in 2022 she received Rabbinic Ordination from Mesifta Adas Wolkowisk – Rabbinical Academy of America\, making history in Buffalo as the first and only dually ordained Jewish clergy person in Western New York. \nCantor-Rabbi Myers is married to neurologist Dr. Bennett Myers and has three children: Hunter\, Saul\, and Corrinne. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row] URL:https://bpo.org/event/new-world-symphony/2024-02-17/ LOCATION:Kleinhans Music Hall\, 3 Symphony Circle\, Buffalo\, NY\, 14201\, United States CATEGORIES:2023-2024 season,2023-24 Classics Series ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/png:https://bpo.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/23030-Web-Box-2324-Classics-sq-600x600-Pops10.png GEO:42.9024987;-78.881739 X-APPLE-STRUCTURED-LOCATION;VALUE=URI;X-ADDRESS=Kleinhans Music Hall 3 Symphony Circle Buffalo NY 14201 United States;X-APPLE-RADIUS=500;X-TITLE=3 Symphony Circle:geo:-78.881739,42.9024987 END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20240209T103000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20240209T103000 DTSTAMP:20240423T094011 CREATED:20230126T204407Z LAST-MODIFIED:20240202T163018Z UID:35124-1707474600-1707474600@bpo.org SUMMARY:Disney in Concert: The Sound of Magic DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Ron Spigelman\, conductor \nA magical multimedia experience celebrating Disney at 100 and featuring animated sequences on the big screen synchronized to new orchestral arrangements of iconic songs\, plus behind-the-scenes historical footage\, artwork\, and sketches. \nJoin us after Saturday’s concert for our annual Sweetheart Dance in the Mary Seaton Room\, featuring music by Ben Baia and the Big City Horns!
