BUFFALO, NY — For the second year in a row, the Buffalo Philharmonic has been recognized for adventurous programming. The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestrais one of 27 American orchestras to be honored with a 2013-2014 ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming at the League of American Orchestras National Conference, taking place June 4-6 in Seattle, Washington. The BPOwas took second place among its group for its programming. The League and ASCAP present the awards each year to orchestras of all sizes for programs that challenge the audience, build the repertoire, and increase interest in music of our time. Approximately $750,000 has been bestowed on orchestras since the awards were established in 1947. The BPO added to the repertoire for solo cello and orchestra this season with their commission and world premiere of Miguel del Aguila’s Concierto en Tango, performed by BPO Principal Cellist Roman Mekinulov. The BPO also presented the New York State premiere of Zhao Jiping’s Concerto for Pipa and Orchestra, and the American premiere of Russell Platt’s “Eurydice.” Works by Osvaldo Golijov, Astor Piazzolla, Alberto Ginastera, Daron Hagen, Jerome Moross and Jennifer Higdon also appeared on BPO programs during the past season. “The story of classical music is still being written,” said BPO music director JoAnn Falletta. “So much exciting music has been composed in the 20th and 21st century. The musicians and I love to showcase this music, and the audience has loved making these musical discoveries with us.
