I notice spikes during AD and a few other functions as well. Incoming update is said to be mostly optimization and performance. Also multi midi out if folks keep posting the request at Feature Request link provided above
Haha. I could almost feel the judgement weighing me down as I typed up the OP. When I clicked ācreate topicā there was an alert prompt that read āare you really sure you want to risk hellfire by posting this here so soon after Elektron updated DN2 with creative chord features?ā.
I thought it was all a bit much personally. That said, I am really loving the 1.10 update as well.
Iām not a music theory guy at all so the amount of chord choices is kinda overwhelming, but Iām finding Scaler 3 much easier to get around than Scaler 2. Shame about the current Ableton workflow, but I was able to load Scaler 3 into Logic Pro (as the āScaler 3 Audioā version) and get full access to the user preset I had been testing it with in the standalone, including the plug-in still being able to host the external VST3s that it had in standalone. So thatās good!
It looks like youāll easily be able to compose the full bed of your instrumental tracks in Scaler 3 standalone, then add Logic Pro goodness to them in terms of drums, vocals and any separate melodies you want to put over the top. I assume you could also do this within Logic while the plug-in is loaded there if you donāt want to go near the standalone. And thatās without mentioning being able to use Scaler Control with Logicās own instruments or just dragging the MIDI info out onto Logicās tracks. Great stuff!
Looking forward to the iOS version. Hopefully any day nowā¦
They said Q2 for that, so I wouldnāt be expecting it until June. I havenāt got the impression that itās near release.
ā¦an absolute no brainer and must have for anybody who wants to go beyond bumm bummā¦
i could cry rivers, if i think about about all that time it took me, to craft out and bring harmonic overall sense to what i was doing for my score and soundtrack works in the 90iesā¦
last step it needsā¦printing out the according score sheets, like logic and cubase doā¦and itās THE modern composition DAW to resist and survive the dawn of all AIā¦
yeah it is a bit weird having to use the extra track but it was fun routing it into multiple VSTs and layering sounds. I put some midi FX onto separate tracks to essentially the same effect but itās just nestled differently. That said I prefer logics approach to midi FX. Itās weird to have to use scaler as a separate track but then use midi devices on individual tracks. I can get used to it. Donāt know if youāve ever used playbox but itās been a fun recording scaler chordsets into there, great way to store a library of progressions and run them through a wide variety of sounds. Is 3 on iOS yet?
No, but they say itās coming later this year.
please, please, please report these issues to them, and thanks for mentioning this.
So as a Scaler 2 owner who has never really got into it. How do you all find yourselves using it?
How does it spark your creativity or inspire you?
It crahes often, as standalone and as plugin in live 12, for me its not usable in this state. V2 worked without flaws.
Same here. Live 12; simple drag of a chord in Scaler 3ās arrangement keeps crashing it.
I use it a couple of ways.
As a musician (Sax). I can explore chords by vibe: happy, jazzy, emo, deep, anthem, etc and instantly know what scale to riff on. Super inspiring for horn, woodwind, EWI and rhythm players of instruments that traditionally canāt play chords alone. Now ya can. I can play any chord progression with my Aerophone controlling Scaler. Magic
I also play inspirational songs into audio detectā¦rinse and repeat above steps to find new melodies, etc.
I use it to create my own samples to chop, which is now supercharged with standalone and hosting features. You can apply effects and infinite VST sounds to make it as retro, lofi, futuristic or noisy as you please without opening a daw. Glorious.
Most time I just explore chord sets until something sounds good. Write lyrics to it, export to Logic, MV-1 or control any combination of soft or hardware synths to contruct a song.
I use it to quickly sketch jingles and radio spots for clients who typically just lob concepts and themes they want to convey.
Scaler, scales to however simple or complicated you need. It is for everyone whether you know theory or not.
I laugh at purists or music snobs who think itās cheating or lazy as if anyone with that opinion is as talented or accomplished as Davide or any of the award winning composers on the dev team that created it as a tool to jumpstart their own projects and compositions.
What a time to be alive.
Is this actually a thing? Or is it imagined by people who feel a bit insecure about their music theory knowledge? (Edit: maybe itās more about feeling guilty about the ease of use??)
I read your sentiment a lot but I never really read sentiments saying that itās lazy or cheating.
You now struggle a level above your competence.
Thanks for your insights. I really should spend some more time with it, given Iāve paid for it.
No worries. Sharing is what makes this place so compelling. However, I wouldnt recommend anyone force themselves to use Scaler or anything that doesnāt help further whatever musical aspiration, journey or experience.
I know that Iāve paid for (far too many) things that are very inspiring or useful to others but just doesnāt click for me.
Give it a fair run but ultimately there is no harm in moving past the simple things that donāt serve you. I do it with comments online and in real life every day all day.
If you do end up finding it inspiring yet challenging in anyway, feel encouraged to check in here or Scaler Music forum to share your experience or feature requests. I believe Community to be the crowning achievement of humanity.
I wouldnāt assume that itās a thing for everyone. I can only speak to my personal experience. However, I would comfortably assume that anyone whoās spent any significant time pursuing anything, certainly art, has likely encountered a fair share of Purists. That is no doubt a thing.
To be honest, most times I donāt really gaf about what people write about a product I use enough to feel any way or another. My comment was speaking to feedback I received from people I know, worked with or interacted with along my journey. I know hella folks I consider to be Purists. Even fond of a few. Plenty of people have told me that they feel Captain Plugs, Scaler and other generative music theory software is cheating or lazy.
Whether it be analog vs digital, HW vs SW, Accoustic vs Electricā¦Iāve heard people vehemently defend whatever hill theyāre on. Others, imo snobbish about the things they covet. No harm, no foul. As I stated, I find it comical. Never really bothersome, as Iām a dismissive person.
Thereās a place for everyone in this musical universe. For me, the key is finding your vibe/tribe amongst it all. Or, where possible, perhaps finding humor in something before being negatively triggered by it.
Has anyone tried running it on Linux?
