Did Serum actually wait on you, or did they just hand you the VST at the counter?
i remember reading Dave DMG audio was working on this
i’m doing NGNY so won’t be buying it so will check it out next year - i bet it’s great.
It was table service, but i only tip in cash so i sent it off with my carrier pigeon to xfer HQ’s, safe travels Robert
The DL did work now - sounds sick, played a bit with some presets, and modified them - they allow now split processing to affect low and high end with different fx chains. Build in sequencer - havent checked, if it also allows modulation per step. But its a serious improvement over the first version.
Smaller companies have that agility and clarity. Larger corps tend to get lost in dumb trends and need to push things out to pay for their bloat/less profitable divisions. And of course, shareholder primacy.
Looks like it’s $189 until June 1st, definitely worth my consideration a little later in the year.
Instantly added to cart only to see that it’s a free upgrade! Amazing!
Obviously tipped as well. <3
Guess it’s time to upgrade.
Last night was impossible, site was constantly down
Just watching video by Virtual Riot. Amazing update
Awesome that they made the upgrade free for Serum 1 owners!
This is literally a BEAST…
Way more than I expected. I will have fun with sub + spectral + SFZ + Wt + Noise to create some electro-acoustic craziness… and the routing, FX busses, scales, clip, arp… oh boy Serum 2 + Pigments + DIVA : au revoir.
Well on first impressions this thing seems to be very powerful, lots of great new features and quality-of-life improvements but it’s still very much recognisable as Serum which I think is great. Nice UI, there’s a lot going on but not too cluttered and there’s really no need to change the fundamental design or the way modulation works - if it aint broke don’t fix it!!
New synthesis types and FX are always appreciated and the multi-band FX processing is a great touch. This kind of stuff makes all the difference if you’re obsessing over DnB bass design and trying to design your own drum sounds etc. Sound design nerd heaven!
I bought V1 as a license transfer years ago for $50 or something, getting this for free is unbelievably generous. I wanted to at least try the demo first to see if it broke my CPU or something but it seems fine, I think a generous tip is probably in order!
Is it backwards compatible with Serum 1 presets? I always avoided getting Serum to force myself to use Ableton Wavetable/stock instruments to the limit, but now I am pretty tempted
got it.
it’s discounted once a decade so that was no brainer.
but now i’m curious.
will there be Vital 2 any soon?
Yes. So you have the new list of factory presets, and then a “S1” list, which contains any old presets from Serum 1. This makes sense really, as if nothing else Serum 1 had one of the most substantial preset ecosystems around it. Fabfilter did the same with Pro-Q4.
Yeah I think the new modes pull it away from the “can do it in the DAW” at this point. As much as Serum 1 was and still is fantastic, you could make the case that stock tools would get you there. Wavetable did a good job of getting close (though sonically I always felt that one was prettier and had a slightly lighter touch than Serum.) The one thing Serum always had was one of, if not the best interfaces for seeing what’s happening, which arguably still made it a better option than Wavetable.
Serum 2 changes that equation. If the argument for Pigments (often made by Ableton Live hardcore folks like Seed to Stage) is that you get all that programming power in one intuitive window - then Serum is back in that conversation. This update pushes it ahead of DAW based options just on account of the ease and speed of access to those features just as Pigments does. For example, in my limited playing with it, using any old Serum chops you have, you can get into granular and spectral synthesis, but without learning a new interface. I was messing before with applying unison (classic Serum move) to a spectral patch which was all kinds of fun. Arguably that’s the most impressive thing about it, even if you are learning on Serum 1, this will be intuitive right off the bat, despite having a lot more depth to it. It’ll put a modern twist on fun sound design for a lot of people no doubt.
There’s “true FM” in new oscillator warp modes. Anyone know what it actually means? Can one oscillator FM the other? Considering there are 3 oscillators now, can we use simple 3-osc algos?
(sorry, I’m at work - I might find some time to test it later in the evening)
My question is more: Will there be any further development of Vital or is it history and only kept alive by some enthusiasts?
Beside mentioning Virtual Riot, SynthHacker also did a quick run down of new stuff in serum.
Like Lfo swing option
Yes, before it was phase Fm, now its real FM with through zero, and linear fm like Prophet 12 can do. And it can use 4 OP, sub plus 3 oscilators, which can be wavetable or samples.
It can also slice the sample, like abelton simpler. So its a drum maschine build in sort of. (would use extra instance just for this.)
LFO bus, can modulate the lfo curve, with per note on random, it can really generate very intresting patches with this feature. (record lots of random, pick the best parts from the recording.)
Only downside is that it needs more cpu now compared to version one. The spectral mode seems to extra hungry.)
Wow, kudos to them for making it a free upgrade. They could easily have asked for $100 for it and a lot of people would have paid.
I don’t have a license, but this kind of thing is making me think about getting one.
That’s great! I was always annoyed when someone claimed that Serum (1) can do FM… Thanks
