DnB/Jungle Battle #2: DRAMARAMA

Think of a Drum n Bass or Jungle track and what sounds come to mind?

The breaks, filter sweeps, detuned bass, yes—
but the atmospherics always pull from the same genres…
Horror movies. Sci-fi. Film noir.
Dr Who; terminators; kaiju battles; serial killers…

We get it. You’re moody.

Well, it’s time to inject some real DRAMA into the genre.

For this month’s battle, your song must incorporate vocals, music, and/or foley
from . . . the soaps!

:tv: YES, SOAP OPERAS! :tv:
DAYTIME DRAMA! TELENOVELAS! K-DRAMAS!
Hell, even ROM-COMS if you want.

That’s the challenge. Make a dirty-ass beat incorporating sounds from any SOAP or ROMANCE of your choiceDYNASTY; NEIGHBOURS; CORONATION STREET; UN POSTO AL SOLE; MUJER DE MADERA; DIGRASSI; SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE; THE NOTEBOOK; A VERY SPECIAL EPISODE OF PERFECT STRANGERS; WITHNAIL & I; TODD HAYNES; PEDRO ALMODÓVAR; AARON SPELLING…

NO SCI-FI. NO HORROR. NO FANTASY.
NO THRILLERS. NO FILM NOIR.
NO EDGY NEWS CLIPS.

Keep your song under 6 min
DM it to @KingDupy
in .WAV, .AIFF, or .FLAC format

I was thinking to go with movie Her from 2013 by Spike Jonze.
I find topic interesting and since it’s romcom/drama/scifi fits the topic

Sorry, the spirit of the challenge is NO Sci Fi.

So that means no Spike Jonze (other than “Adaptation” or “Jackass” I guess).

But “Her” is 100% SF. It’s the first two words of the description.

“Eternal Sunshine” would also be a no.

Think more camp… did someone accidentally marry their step-sister, or come back from a faked death as their own long-lost twin? Are there huge shoulder pads and flat lighting? Are there cheesy chord stabs and shocking personal revelations? Lots of gasps? Or faces getting slapped? Then you’re good.

Think more bad TV than good movies.

I was about to make a PAL/NTSC joke but I guess thats what VPNs are for these days.

Does this qualify?

I was gonna go with Domingão do Faustão but this seemed more appropriate.

First thing that popped into my head too

holy moly… what did you show me here… how many golden globes / oscars for this performance? Never seen anything like this. Is this the end of Hollywood?

But honestly… isn’t this just like horror used in a track? Nobody will get it…probably

Interesting idea! @KingDuppy Is there already a deadline for this battle? I need some pressure!

How many samples do I need to incorporate from daytime drama? I started watching some cheesy German cruise romance movies. :upside_down_face: There is a lot of dialogue but the score itself is not overwhelming regarding interesting sounds.

.WAV, .AIFF, or .FLAC format, please!

As far as samples, I would say use as many or as few as you like.

This challenge is more about drawing inspiration from source material outside your usual comfort zone.

What about reality tv trash like Married at first sight?

Sure, why not?

(although that sure sounds like horror to me)

Edit:
So now I’m kind of upset thinking about how reality shows have replaced the cheesy overlit serial as the modern-day daytime TV trash. Not that I’m a soap opera fan or know all that much about them. But it does seem like a different and meaner era of bad TV that we’re in now.

I would say this also means RuPaul’s Drag Race is fair game, since so much of it is campy personal drama—but only if you don’t use any of the pop songs. That would definitely be cheating.
