Midi Notes and Audio Recording into DAW - Overbridge - [SOLVED]

Hello,

I am trying to record a sequence I have created on the AR2 to DAW (Reaper).
Audio to seperate tracks and midi to a single (or seperate) track(s).

What I can do already:
Record all Audio to different tracks in DAW. (with Overbridge)
Or Stereo track, if in Midi/USB mode.

Not working:
Simultaneously record the Midi notes played back by AR2 to a midi track.

When I punch the Pads, the Midi notes are recorded, as I want…
When playing back a performance, no notes are recorded.

Same behaviour in Midi/USB-Mode.
Recording to a Stereo Track…ok.
Midi Notes will record when played with Pads…ok.
Midi notes of Playback performance are not recorded.

When I punch in a sequence in Reaper and send to AR2, it is played correctly.
Also, in Midi/USB and Overbridge mode.

I read this thread:

but I couldn’t make any sense of it.

Is this behaviour of DAW and AR2 normal?

Is there no way I can record the midi notes, while playing back my programmed sequence in AR2?

Thank you for your help or explanation.

Hi, I believe that the Elektron paradigm with all devices is that audio tracks are audio tracks and midi tracks are midi tracks, therefore audio tracks do not produce midi data and the midi tracks do not produce audio data.

Pressing a pad is like using a controller, it’s a direct midi trigger and therefore a pad will register a midi note, but the sequencer for audio notes does not produce or send any midi data.

You would not be the first person to respond “why? all my other gear sends midi notes with the sequencer. that’s dumb.” and you may or may not be correct in those feelings, but I am a person who doesn’t even own an AR so save it for elektron or whatever, send them an email.

I’m 99% certain that all modern elektron devices work in this fashion, but I don’t have experience with RYTM directly so unless someone can confirm differently, this is the behavior that I would expect.

Sorry.

I don’t know that it will help, but on Digi devices you can copy audio track note data to a midi track and then play the 2 tracks in parallel. Maybe that’s a workaround for you.

Thank you, I wasn’t sure, but I guess now I am.
I thought, this can’t be possible, that it is not possible :joy:

I will look into your suggestion and figure out, if that is possible on the AR2.
If not, I guess I have to commit to the sounds I recorded, and tweak from there.
Sounds like old school guitar recording :scream: to me.
But maybe for the good. :+1:
Thank you again!!!

UPDATE:
IT IS WORKING!
WORKING UNDER OVERBRIDGE AND MIDI/USB - Mode

Turns out:
Hidden in TRIG-Menu (access via FUNC+TRIG)
All the Tracks can be set to “TRK 1-12 SEND MIDI … ON”
—NOTE: This has to be done for all Patterns individually!
-----------So if already set for Pattern A-1 and working,
-----------when switching to A-2 (or any other) TRK SEND MIDI needs to be checked ON again.
-----------COPY and PASTE will also transfer TRK SEND MIDI setting!

And equally important,
Under: Settings - Midi-Config - Port-Config:

  1. Set: Output Ch … TRK CH
  2. Set: PAD Dest … INT+EXT

Using Overbridge, you can record Audio AND Midi at the same time.
Create a pattern on RYTM2 and transfer to DAW.
Use RYTM2 with your favourite VST drums…

And also the other way around:
Program a beat in DAW and send to RYTM2 hardware individual tracks!
