How to connect and sync a Model:Samples and Roland S-1 for Jamming?

Newbie question here, please be kind! I have a Model:Samples and a Roland S-1, and I’d like to connect and sync them while jamming. Do I need a small mixer like the Mackie Mix5 to do this?
I was thinking of setting it up this way:

Model:Samples → Mixer
Roland S-1 → Mixer
Mixer → Speaker
Model:Samples MIDI Out → Roland S-1 sync In

Am I correct?

That looks like it would work, but I think (I don’t own one) the S-1 has an audio input that you can feed the M:S into … if I’m right you should be able to start without the mixer and see if that is enough.

I just looked it up and the mix in will take audio input. Like @bibenu said, samples to S1 to speakers should get you going without a mixer.

I have an M:C, which seems to do something odd with the clock going out of the MIDI out. If the M:S is the same, then you can take M:S MIDI out to S-1 sync in, as you described, but that feels a little off. It should be M:S MIDI out to S-1 MIDI in.

The S-1 sync in expects 24ppqn clock, which M:S doesn’t provide (the Digis can do it but over DIN). Use the MIDI in, and make sure your M:S is set to send CLK OUT in the MIDI settings. Also, the S-1 in is a straight aux input, it is not affected by any controls on the S-1. So your “mixer” is decentralized, the separate volume knobs on the M:S and S-1.

You need the Roland style Type A TRS midi to DIN conversion cable, I don’t think that this product includes one. You need to make sure that it’s a Type A cable, Type B will not work with this device.

Otherwise, all of the information is already laid out here. Sync is not the correct input, it’s primarily for use with drum machines or analog gear, or basically anything which uses clock sync for primary connectivity.

Yes, midi will synchronize the devices but sync, specifically, is a word associated with another type of technology, so basically you just want to use the midi ports on the rear as opposed to the sync ports on top.

I think M:S has 3.5mm MIDI in/out, so a straight 3.5mm TRS cable should work. S-1 is MIDI type A, so the default STD output polarity setting (OUT POL) on the M:S will be good. The other setting is to have M:S work with type B devices.

This is a good point, between the two you can use a TRS straight cable. I neglected to look at the connection on the other side.

So like, a headphone cable should be ok here for you OP, as long as the M:S out port settings are correct.

Thank you guys! So what if I connect the M:S MIDI out/thru to the S-1 MIDI in, and set the M:S clock out in “on” just like in this video?
And it seems he’s using a standard 3,5mm jack male/male.

It should work, right?

EDIT: typo (off → on)

The video changes the M:S clock setting from “off” to “on”! You want it at ON.

That’s exactly what I mean :')
