Problem connecting Digitakt and Syntakt to Ableton

Hi,

Lately I’ve been using my Digitakt as the “brain” and my Syntakt as a kind of back up for kick + bass + texture, etc.

I have my Digi set to send MIDI and clock, and Syn to receive MIDI and clock. When I output the audio from the Syn to my speakers, everything is working fine. I finally have a track down and want to record it via Overbridge to Ableton, so that I can further edit / EQ / comp the individual tracks etc.

However, when I press play on my Digi, the Syn doesn’t play. I have both running to separate MIDI channels in Ableton. But for whatever reason, Syn isn’t receiving MIDI and clock.

I can try to press play on both machine at the exact same time, but obv that’s a kind of awkward work around.

Anyone have any idea what’s going on?

If both are connected over OB, use Ableton for clock and transport. The timing tight assuming you’re not sequencing the ST from the DT over that MIDI connection.

Does this mean that when you press play on DT without a computer involved you get both devices playing and you get audio to your speakers? Or does this mean when you press play on the ST individually you get sound output, but at no point have they both started simultaneously?

I think that we need to first establish whether or not the transport sync is a problem at all times or only when connected to the DAW.

Yeah, with no computer involved, they both play at the same time when I press play on the Digi. Through OB, I press play on the Digi and it plays but the Syn doesn’t.

I know it’s tedious, but can you run through your cable connections and menu settings with me on the hardware side only so that we can get on the same page about how you’re physically set up?

I’m not super knowledgeable about the Ableton side of set up, but I think that we can probably figure out why the sync drops when it’s connected to OB.

I suspect that it’s something simple but even if it’s not, if we put it all out on the table then it will be easier for someone else to crack it even if I can’t directly see the issue.

Hi, I think I’ve figured it out — I need to press play from Ableton, and not from the devices. A little funky because I like to step away from the computer, but not the worst thing.

You might be able to change the behavior but if it’s working, I don’t know if you want to deal with it as is or continue and figure out the transport behavior.

At this point you would need to make Digitakt’s physical buttons the midi controller for Ableton’s transport. I think it’s doable, but obviously not necessary if you’re happy with it like this.

Thank you! I think for now I’m ok with the current set up—pressing play/record on the computer and then switching over to the devices. Will follow up if things get wonky. Really appreciate your help, as always!
