Elektron model:Samples or alternatives?

Hello everyone! I’m on dude about buy the model samples, for first i wanna take a digitakt, this sampler its a beast, but, i can’t spend so much and also is my first groovebox so then i prefer some cheap but quality. People recommend me to take for first groovebox the Roland TR8S, I like so much also and quality, construction, versatility its really good, the price it’s a bit out of my budget but I could make an effort. Then, with which machine do you think I can have greater creativity when working? I use ableton as a program, my idea is to use ableton as a starting point, being able to create beats with an external machine. I know they are different machines but I don’t know which one to choose. I like to produce minimal house music, in case it’s any information. Thanks!

Hi !

What do you want to explore ?

  1. new * sounds
    a) *synth
    b) *percussive
  2. new ways to * music
    a) *program
    b) *play
  3. better
    a) sampling capabilities
    b) Ableton integration

What is your budget right now ? Can you wait and save more money ?

Ableton Move is a very different approach for example (pad oriented) that focus more on jamming and integrates very well with Ableton.
Model:Samples on its side allows deeply sequencing (parameter lock, chance, looping lengths …) and a bit of sound design (not much compare to a Digitakt) : it gives a good taste of elektron sequencer.

If I were you I think I’d saved more money for a used Digitakt mk1 (a sampling beast) or an Ableton Move (a fun jamming instrument).

You’ve probably already made your decision but just looked up this topic to see if there was any news regarding the Model series units as I’m thinking about getting one again (Samples). I have the Digitakt II and absolutely love it; and I agree with everything GGG says.

I would just add that the closer to knob-per-function nature of the Models units and–if you love it–their material feel and look really make them their own beasts. Also, you can get one used for about half or less than a used Digitakt I.

While it’s more limited in many ways, it also retains some degree of the “infinite” given the combination of being a sampler (or sample player) and incredible sequencer. You’ll make different music on it than a Digitakt–not worse or sonically more limited from a listener’s perspective, IMO.

I also wanted to get the Digitakt but besides the Roland S-1, it would be my first gear. So I thought to not complicate too much and get a Model:Samples first to get familiar with Elektron workflow and not get overwhelmed, learn it inside out, then when I feel ready, move to the Digitakt.
