My main goal is to finish some tracks, to learn Bitwig back and forward, dive deeper in modular synthesis with VCV and hardware and save some money for renovations.
Getting rid of unused items feels cathartic and I’ll consider this year a success if I manage to rid myself of the rest of my unused gear. I’d commit fully but I’m not sure I can resist getting a DN at some point…
I’m never going to proclaim that I won’t get any new gear in a given year, but, I will proclaim that I will be more focused in any gear purchases or trades. Is there a reason I’m getting a specific piece of gear? What will I do with it? Is it redundant by something else I have…
I failed last year but will commit again this year. I can’t think of any excuse not to.
I’ve got a ‘25 setup ready for immediate music making: A DNII (which is insanely excellent, I love it) combined with an AH+FX and Keylab MIDI controller, a decent pair of speakers and headphones and a solid SPL ADC for recording.
All the rest I own is packed and ready to be sold, so I will only get rid of redundant gear this year, no more new gear it is🤞!
I’m thinking the same. I’m already in the process of selling a bunch of stuff, but I probably will upgrade from DT to DTII and replace two of my mixers with Zoom L-6. So I won’t be joining the challenge, but will continue to get inspired by it
I’ve gone to my MPC Live 2 as my sequencer, binning Ableton and it’s more than enough - a slower but more immersive experience. I had a big clear out, bought an AH+FX, Machinedrum UW+ and a Perkons. Add this to my analogue synths and I’ve got a lot to work with, in all manner of styles.
I’m intent on only using YT and forums to inspire me to write, not buy.
i’m not very active here, but i’m in – with a couple of guitar-related caveats. i’m allowed to buy a dark star stereo for my birthday next month ( i don’t have a reverb pedal ), i can trade whatever comes in my chase bliss mystery box if i don’t get along with it, and i can buy tools and parts to refinish my jazzmaster and get it playing / sounding nice again. it’s been neglected for 3 years since getting into harware synths and plugins. definitely no new synth stuff or plugins.
I’m not in this year but wanted to wish everyone who is luck with sticking to their goal.
I’ve been semi in a few years running including last year and it really did help change the habit. I only had two purchases last year, one was a mixer that was planned even with NGNY in mind, because I was moving house and it was a natural junction to introduce it when getting everything else setup again. The other was a Polyend Play at a price too good to sleep on.
I’m not in this year because I don’t think I need it anymore. Life has gotten busy to the point that I know I can’t introduce and learn new gear. I’m no longer looking for things to make workflow easier because I’m not getting in front of my gear in the first place. I know for example that the PE Play might also gather dust, but I’m fairly sure it will suit me for sequencing drums. That was something I decided at least a year ago and didn’t act on.
I feel confident now I can still keep up with following new gear coming out without becoming obsessed or convinced it will change my music making habits. My goal now is to carve out some time and mental space for making music and get some output happening.
So yeah, just wanted to say, even if you don’t do this perfectly, a few cracks at NGNY can definitely make a difference.
Not in this year but I’ve been massively inspired by everyone’s efforts. Thanks to that I have sold a lot of pieces or put them away and managed to make a way more efficient setup that I can actually navigate. And curtailed a lot of new purchases
I think that’s up to you. I’m personally keeping hardware and software the same, Time off from new things is what I personally could do with so software is inclusive of that.
great to see all the replies and how many people are in - bests to everyone this year!
I’m not going to increase my gear footprint / investments, that’s for sure. I don’t have space for more. I really do not plan on buying anything in 2025 with the exception of new Elektron releases (because I know myself too well).
If a TV or ST2 comes out and looks enticing enough, I could absolutely buy one or both of those things (and sell other equipment to make room and cash for it). I have skipped on the last two Elektron releases but the next ones I have been banking on for a while.
But I’m quite happy with my setup and instead, I’m struggling with motivation / creativity issues right now. Hoping to get back in the swing of things this year and I’m certain new gear generally won’t help.
I am in this year. Ordered an Oxi One between christmas and new year which has not arrived yet. That should keep me busy paired with DNII, DTII, OTmk2 and the MicroFreak.
