Roto Control (MIDI controller by Melbourne Instruments)

Not more than their quote I posted when opening this thread. January is coming, so we‘ll hopefully know more in a month!

I see they’re at NAMM.

They’ve just shared a little “sneak peak” with me:

Guess the announcement is imminent.

First thought: I wish it had more knobs and/or sliders instead of buttons and displays. I prefer UC4 to EC4 for that reason. I can see a lot of people getting excited about this though, especially if the price is right. Let’s see how well it works with hardware, or if it works best with VSTs. The screens seem to indicate it’s being used for a 303 cutoff (probably VST) as well as JU 06 decay and cutoff (probably the boutique) at the same time.

If they can get a nice balance in price and ease of use (mapping) this for sure could be a killer controller to sit in the middle of a setup.

Which adds more expense rapidly.

Look at the color on the displays, and the color on the buttons. I think maybe you can switch each one individually, rather than switching as a bank ( like on other ecuipment ), so that you can maximize the choice of controls immediately changeable, and make best use of the motorized controls.

The displays with each means you get feedback beyond the knob position, on things like what parameter is being controlled and on which device or application. This could work with MIDI 2.0, and with tight DAW integration, and VSTs.

If the buttons could also be multiply mapped, and having color designations on each, they also be part of a dynamic control system.

Look at what was done with things like the MP MIDI device ( thread ) on multiple simultaneous interfaces with individual displays.

Is there more we are not seeing in this picture ?

ADDED : MIDI 2.0 adds property exchange, and also having note specific controls beyond just poly-aftertouch, and the dimensions in MPE. Both could come into play with this new device. Having detents on the knob also allows it to act like a selector knob.

All valid points. I’m sure it will give you a lot more control especially if you use it with your DAW. It looks a bit like the Push encoders plus display, but probably even more advanced and with the benefit of knobs that will show you the value at a glance instead of endless encoders that need a display.

The jumping between what the knob does you describe still sounds like you could use track of things quickly or you constantly have to look at the tiny screens.

Especially if you want to control something like an Elektron, they will have to show what the advantage is and how the feedback between values and knob position would work. After all, we already have eight encoders there but only access to one menu page at a time. I‘m using a MIDI controller to work around that limitation.

But the cool thing with complex MIDI controllers is you can program your own control surface and internalize that, so I still see a lot of potential here and am looking forward to the reveal.

Especially if you can create your own macro controls ( like on a Hydrasynth ) with control of multiple parameters, on potentially multiple devices, all happening simultaneously turning one control knob. But this is only speculation.

Looking forward to learning more.

By the way, spot on with the early information, and starting this thread. The thread will be able to have a real product name fairly soon.

Feature request

The ability to capture control animations and then map them onto other controls and control the speed of those animations, and make them one shots or looping animations.

Haha, well that was easy, since they chose to tease stuff knowing I would post it on Elektronauts .

USB C and at least two 5 pin MIDI ports seem good news, lets see what the price is, but I’m guessing it’s going to be around 1000€$.

There is also that keypad area. I was wondering if a lower part might have been blacked out ?

Since it is products plural, maybe a larger and/or smaller version of what is in the picture, and maybe a keyboard version ?

( As long as we are still in speculation mode for this thread ! )

Was hoping for a motorized fader MIDI controller. : (

This could also just mean they’re bringing different colors of Delia, the new knobs were announced pretty recently. And Delia is also still quite new.

But they also sent me a mail saying they’ll bring OT MK III with a motorized fader .

They’ve already shown various colors of DELIA at a show. What, they got pink now ?

They have been to lots of shows, which is good to see.

We’ve already suggested some all cap female names upthread. SYLVIA keeps popping to mind, i suppose because it is so unlikely.

There are a bunch of these, though?

Name one that works dawless.

Can’t wait to see what they’ve cooked up. It’s a good sign cost-wise that they’ve kept it fairly small / contained. I wasn’t expecting motorized faders given that their tech focus has been on the knobs.
