Agreed. I only use the OG as a multi-timbral soundmodule anyway. I sequence it from the Digitakt 2 as well.
And for that job it does as well as ever
Edit: The only thing that annoys me to no end is that you can’t change tracks in Mute mode on the OG. Just why… it makes no sense and would be such an easy bugfix to allow Func+Track to switch tracks. Probably will never happen now
Probably the best two arguments for sticking with the OG:
(but also a good argument for DN II, since I would never have the patience to program that with only four tracks. @MichaalHell’s idea of using the 16 tracks rather as blocks of 4 or 8 for live playing is tempting!).
@ylva: are you getting a DN II? Hoping Elektron just sent you one, I’m sure you sold thousands for them!
For sure. You come to ylva’s music because of the Elektrons, but you stay there because it’s just fantastic music. I’m sure they could make great tracks with every piece of gear.
Technically, the reason traffic authorities prefer yellow driving lights / fog lights to bright white lights on vehicles is the yellow is supposedly better for our eyes. Also easier to see in fog conditions (less blinding against the white mist).
Yellow also has pleasing effects psychologically vs other colors.
But personally, I just like it better. Feels more like 80’s tech glow meets modern industrialism when it comes together in an Elektron box and I love it.
Just a personal opinion though, doesn’t have to be something everyone enjoys!
Thinking about it more, I couldn’t see myself buying a DT1 as the DT2 seems better in virtually every l way. However, I could see myself buying a OG DN - it feels different enough form the 2 and still valid
I am surly torn, i just love fm, but more is more - you can use the OG alongside a DN2, even share patches to some extend. Only do bass and kick on the OG when you upgrade, pan it and you have 2 more outs from the DN2.
As single box the DN2 ofc clearly wins, and i like the 128 steps - it makes composing so much easier - a phrase in pattern - that alone is very very tempting. Just use some conditions on the last steps, prepare your transition. With DN1 you have to plan a lot, work with different speeds of the sequencer etc.
This is probably the worst (or best demonstration) of the sticking buttons problem I’ve seen, at least illustratively of the issue. Usually most of it is rubbed off so it makes it difficult to tell the stages of degradation. I hope they might send you some new buttons if you asked!
A case could be made for using two OG Digitones: you would get 2 sets of outputs, opening the way for creative routing to external effects.
(I’m somewhat disappointed Elektron does not offer physical separate outputs any more. I can’t get myself to bring a computer on stage just for Overbridge, and using external FX pedals is a nice way to single out your sound)
Price-wise, I think you could get away with ~800€ for both at the moment.
Give it a week or 2 and it might cost even less for 2 units.
I have 2 digitakt 1’s and they’re both severely depreciated in value.
I wasn’t really planning on getting rid of them, but if the value had held, I might consider selling one and upgrading to a digitakt 2. I honestly just don’t feel extremely motivated to do that though.
Digitone 2 offers more (in my opinion) over the original, but not so much more that I’m feeling impossibly compelled to do the immediate upgrade. It is a device that I will almost certainly purchase at some point though, but if it had a yellow display and individual outs then yes it might be a priority
DN2 makes perfect sense if you read through feature request topic. majority of posts are about new synth engines, more voices, more tracks, more filters.
