Battle #32: 3 Year Anniversary Voting & Feedback

Whatsup guys!

Shout out to all of you posting samples and submitting beats for making this a dope battle! It is good to see some new people joining, and some veterans going stronger than ever. Shout out to @Doug for hosting this with me. Sadly some people had to drop out of the battle in the end, but we still managed to cook up 13 tracks to make this a competitive battle!

  • You can vote if you submitted a track to the battle. If you didn’t, all feedback is very welcome but won’t count for the results.
  • As usual, please vote for your top three (not including your own beat of course).
    1st: 3 pts
    2nd: 2 pts
    3rd: 1 pt
  • Every beat in this playlist deserves to be listened to thoroughly, so please give the tracks some spins and attention before voting!
  • Giving some constructive feedback on the tracks is highly encouraged!
  • Please note that track 9 is posted as an audio file below the soundcloud playlist. Soundcloud removed it because of copyright issues.

Please have your votes in by Friday august 2nd. The winner gets eternal fame, and the honour of hosting the next battle.

As @flipinfantile pointed out, track 9 is missing from the soundcloud playlist. It was removed because of copyright issues. I posted it on the bottom as an audio file upload. Please don’t miss it!

Someone just missed the deadline and send me their track today after I put up this thread.

Even though strictly speaking this person missed the deadline, I think the more tracks the better, so I added it as the 13th track in the playlist. Hope everyone is ok with that!

Track notes
1 - nice and fat, enjoying the time stretch artifacts. Drums nicely human
2 - nice and moody, the beat is massive, good use of stereo, good sense of progression
3 - I like how wonky this is and the use of delay. Beats could hit a little harder
4 - Phil! Bass is chunky, has a kind of dark underwater vibe
5 - some good wonk on this and scratches, mmm it’s nodding, fresh
6 - wow, this is out there some serious agent guarde going on
7 - yikes that beat hits like a hammer, like the fills and how the vocals slot in
8 - mmm this is in the pocket, vocal sample and piano is locked, maybe would have liked a bit more variation but love it
9 - Floyd breaks, cheeky changeup
10 - Oh! The energy and the filtering. This is veeeerrrry much my thing. Big smiles. Piano change up, yeah
11 - I like the glitchyness, super playful and fun
12 - moody intro, nice bass, did not expect the beat, but it really works, ghost town vibes
13 - clean on the intro, nice wonk in the beat, love how the vocals are integrated

Goddamn, I’ve totally forgotten about the contest! Oh well, I’ll be back for the 10th birthday lol

Meanwhile I’ll have a listen to the submissions!

Its a shame you missed it! Hope you’ll be back for the next one.

Congrats to you too though, you’re the one who initiated the idea to do these battles, and here we are 3 years later. :muscle:t3:

Yeah, among all of us who launched the beat battle back then, I must be the deadbeat dad who shows up once in a decade with a half done beat in his bag as a birthday gift

I couldn’t participate; I tried creating something with samples from some tracks, but nothing worked out.
Since I’m a beginner in sampling, I’d really like to know how you created your tracks, which samples you used. In most tracks I can’t guess the original tracks (apart the track 9 :-), probably the samples are very short.
Thanks anyway, it was a pleasure listen to the playlist.

After the voting round is done, we can discuss how these tracks were made.
In general I tend to go for parts that make it easy to get some good sounding chords out of it, keys or strings, pads.
For me getting a nice flow and groove out of chord slices is the start of a track.
You’ll get the hang of what sounds will work.
I need harmonic tension in a track to inspire me.
If I can make a drumpart and basspart that work with it then I know I can make it a complete track.
I often make another pattern with chordslices for a second part, maybe variations.
Often I use stem separation (I use FL Studio).
A couple of vocal lines. Take on bass slice (1 note) that sounds good and use harmonic mode (on SP) to play a new part with it. Or use a synth or sample if the original bass does not work.
Resample with fx.
Use drumsamples or slice a beat.
Add some synthparts.

1st: track 13 - felt like this one aligned most with the summer theme. very laid-back, easy-going, and enjoyable

2nd: track 3 - it’s hard for me to state exactly what draws me to this track. it’s so weird and borderline discordant (not a slight!). all the elements ultimately work together and the listen was just fun.

3rd: track 2 - lots of moving pieces that sit well in the arrangement. really liked the transformation near the end of the track.

thanks to @Sleepyhead and @Doug and everyone participating and lurking! it’s not always easy to find such a consistently positive and active community on the internet. appreciate you all.

Very tough choice! Lots to with all these

1st (3 pts) - Track 2: love the overall flow and feel of this one, particularly the beat switch in the middle and the loose synth leads that reminded me of some 70s prog in a good way.

2nd (2 pts) - Track 5: got a very “too hot summer day” vibe from this one  … solid and consistent feeling production, while still keeping things interesting and the fit for Conway was spot on.

3rd (1 pt) - Track 6: liked how it built tension through repetition, with different layers drifting in and out, very atmospheric and would love to hear and extended version of this.

thank you for the reminder! i forgot i wrote some sloppy notes down the other morning

1st: Track 5
2nd: Track 7
3rd: Track 10

Track 1 - bouncy chords, nice psychedelicy vibe

Track 2 - cool gfunk lead, dreamy swells, like the vocals, chunky drums, change up is soothing, oooooo’s

Track 3 - enjoy the filtered chords, nice use of delays, nice drum grooves

Track 4 - great combination of samples, compliment each other well, nice and punchy drums, “damn right i like the super nintendo”

Track 5 - real smokers music, i thought the playlist has moved into a Griseldq playlist on accident. like the bitcrushed lead in the back, transition between verses is great

Track 6 - the lana sample works really well with the guitar, feels like a sunset drive down a long empty highway type tune.

Track 7 - love the plinky piano sample, drums bump, acapella is a great compliment

Track 8 - punchy drums, could see some Griselda flows working well on this too, i enjoy the turnaround fills with the chords

Track 9 - sample use is energetic, i like the vocal swell, also a big fan of the big snare

Track 10 - bangs, love the sax, makes me wanna dance, love the switch ups, great pitched vocals, crazy piano sample works great as a bridge type section

Track 11 - love the trapaholics samples, bouncy bass

Track 12 - like the laid back groove, feels like a song one might hear in a spy movie when the spy is infiltrating a beach party

Track 13 - great swing on the drums, nice and crunchy, i like the reversed sounding sample floating in the back, great use of strings and singing samples

I nearly always say it but hard to pick a top 3!

1st - 7 - Great sound. Great fitting acapella. Hazy summer vibes. Stayed in my head after listening.

2nd - 5 - Drums are great. Very cool creative chops of the Joni Mitchell sample (I think!) Sonically one of my favourites too.

3rd - 2 - This one has really grown on me after a few listens. Dope synth work, great change ups and creativity.

Close calls to the top 3:

10 - Big energy! The change up at 1:40 was unexpected and very fun. Summer party vibes.

11 - Early Hud Mo and Rustie vibes! A really fun listen and lots of the glitchy bits were super tight and funky.
