I recently took delivery of a shik N32B controller and just finished setting up the midi config as I wanted it.
My plan was to have:
SHIK (midi out) -> Octatrack (midi in)
Octatrack (midi out) -> Digitakt (midi in)
Digitakt (midi out) -> Digitone (midi in)
The issue is that when connected as above, none of the messages from the SHIK are sent to the digitakt (I specifically want it to be able to control both digitakt and octatrack), but I also need the clock and transport from octatrack to be sent down the chain (which I lose if I connect to midi thru)
you want a midi merge box. connect the output of the OT and SHIK to its inputs, then the output of that to the DT (and DN, if you want SHIK data going there too). a thru box won’t help here. the issue is that you want the CC data from the SHIK merged with the clock and transport data from the OT (I assume). and the OT can’t do that itself.
as @BoutiqueCase mentioned, the Midi Solutions ones are affordable and don’t need external power. there are other options as well.
Ahh okay, I was hoping that more gear wasn’t the answer, but (sadly) it is always the answer).
Just to sound the idea here, what if I sent midi out into the shik?
So:
Octatrack midi out - SHIK midi in
SHIK midi out - Octatrack midi in
Octatrack midi thru - digitakt.
Would this then add the clock and transport signals to the midi thru channel?
this assumes that the controller merges incoming midi with its own and pushes that to its midi out port. do we know that the SHIK controller does? the Faderfox PC12 specifically states that it does this on its product page. the SHIK is new to me, and I don’t see this on its page (though I haven’t dug deeply).
@billybaskin you can also use OT midi tracks to pass midi through MIDI OUT.
If you set the Shik to OT Autochannel, the selected midi track will send midi with active midi track channel.
If you set the Shik to a specific channel, OT midi tracks set to that channel will send back midi data to MIDI OUT even if the midi track isn’t selected.
OT audio tracks channels have to be different from midi tracks channels, otherwise midi tracks can’t receive midi.
" To pass midi messages like clock, it is better to use the midi Thru port. It will output the message very fast, as it is a real hardware Thru. The midi out port can be used as Thru, but it is software based and is slower than the hardware Thru.
So for clock it is recomended to use the hardware port."
Okay, I’ve set MIDI channel 1 to channel 10 through src/note setup, but still the messages don’t get forwarded. Do I also need to change the channels in the trig menu?
