Introducing Digitakt II

on rytm I use retrigs with velocity mod to simulate secondary delay, although I would love to have a delay similar to the Ableton Live “Filter Delay” where you have 3 separate delays that can have individual signatures and panning

Ah okay, I get it. In this case, resampling is your best workaround for now. For this reason, I think I’d rather have another (send) effect altogether, something that can’t be achieved with workarounds. Phaser-like effects can be achieved with the EQ and LFO, all kinds of vibratos and tremolos are also possible with the LFOs. Grid and amp envelope can be used for all kinds of cool chopping effects. My top choice for most useful addition would be a very simple one knob stereo width dial.

Yes, and it’s the ultimate work around

I’m still amazed how many times I realize “oh, resample!” to get around limits.

Yes indeed, resampling opens some crazy doors, not unlike OT. Just not while playing (yet?).

Retrigs are a good enough delay alternative, at times, but are interrupted by subsequent trigs. So good mostly for short delay times or spaced trigs.

A good trick is to program secondary trigs with lower velocities to fake your delay, it’s the most interesting in my opinion, cause it’s a fast enough workflow: don’t forget you can hold several trigs at the same time to adjust velocity at once.
This lets you really shape what you keep and what you leave, and offers to have different settings for such secondary trigs.
E.g. you can set all primary trigs probability to 100% and lower settings for others.
Different LFOs maybe, or pan…
In the end it brings you to a path where you create more complex rhythms.

As we have plenty of tracks, you can also divide primary and secondary trigs in two different tracks, that you might generate with Euclidean sequencer.

@LyingDalai Would love to see a video showing this workflow

The original Digitakt is now officially ‘legacy’:

That should give closure on the future of further updates.

“Legacy”? Excellent. I’ll hold onto mine, and it’ll be worth a lot more than current used prices a few years from now…

I’m also thinking that instead of selling my DT into a saturated used market for not much money, I’ll keep it for drum machine duties alongside the DT2 (when I eventually get one). Whatever the future holds, the OG DT will forever be an amazing 8-track drum sampler.

16 tracks for stereo melodic samples on DT2 plus 8 tracks for mono drum/perc samples on OG DT plus 12 tracks of (mostly, as I use it) mono synths on Syntakt = 36 tracks to play with. That is… a lot. Incredible to think that 3 little boxes can cover so much ground. And that’s before adding the A4 mk2 that’s been on my GAS list since forever…

why ? … there are many devices in the legacy area which have had updates . .it’s simply not available to buy, like the original A4 / OT / Ar etc … but they all got parity updated (where possible) last time

People have recently purchased the DT and e25 DT so it will get updated to some degree, not least of which for OB and pc compatibility etc … there is a lot of crossover between legacy products and their replacements (arguably the DT II is a little more than an evolution, but there’s still some common ground) … where things get stickier to predict and where we have no ‘precedent’ is with regards to the development environment changes … that’s more significant than the ‘legacy’ label imho … only time will tell, but let’s not jump the gun writing these off - we simply don’t know

Fair enough. I think in your examples above the parity comes from the OS being the same. Similarly if the Digitone Keys was discontinued but Digitone would still be around, it would get that update support because the OS is shared - which is not the case with Digitakt & Digitakt II.

I definitely think things like OB compatibility will continue to see updates, but I think major OS updates (that bring new features) are unlikely, which is what I mean.

I fink the way they called it digitakt 2 rather than mk2 might mean OG digitakt won’t necessarily get updates in the same way A4 & AR mk1 have done.

disclaimer: I could be totally wrong tho hey

I’m not entirely sure the labelling hints as much towards that as it does emphasise that the newer one is stereo - i can imagine that boardroom meeting on the semantics of Mk2 vs 2 or MKII vs II and that the elegance of dropping MK would win out as a nod to stereo

i could also be totally wrong tho hey, i just have a different take on the name … the potential issue for legacy users may well be more related to a shift in development, but then again, all the other current gear is on the old legacy platform so it’s no step change … time will tell

All this page suggests is that it is no longer in production, not that it is “EOL” for updates.

Obviously some features will be supported on the new embedded platform going forward.

But, supportable work could be backported at some point after the 2 is stabilized.

Got to say, seems unlikely to me that they would backport features to the DT1. Bug fixes maybe, but features? I can hear the complaints already. “You gave us X from the DT2 but you didn’t give us Y. ?!? I don’t understand how this is possible in 2024 etc, etc”

Does the Digitakt II have it’s own thread and is this it as there isn’t much activity here compared to some instrument threads?

I’d been looking at Elektron gear again recently after deciding I wanted to try something fresh. Originally I was looking at the Rytm 2 and Analogue Four mk2, but then I watched a couple of Digitakt II videos that really impressed me and i’ve just bought one. I haven’t used any Elektron gear since selling my Digitakt maybe 5 or 6 years ago due to not really using it much while I had it, plus when I did use it, I was spending too much time building perhaps unremarkable loops and not really achieving much, but now maybe i’m ready to embrace it.

I’m really hoping I can use this on my lap as that I how I prefer to make music these days, but I never tried to use it that way with the OG. Curious to know if people have tried to use it that way?

Would also like to know roughly how long the cable is from the brick to the barrel, to know whether or not to buy an alternative connection similar to what I use with some other gear? I have currently added 2 cables to my basket on a site right now which should offer a freer working method.

I’m sure more questions will follow.

It has it’s own “bugs” and “features” threads, but otherwise, it’s all mixed in with the DT1 content.

Oh, also → Share Digitakt II Beats here ✌🏽

Ah, I guess it does make more sense having an Elektron part of the forum and Digitakt sub part of the forum rather than a specific thread given the majority of the forum are Elektron users and having seen how many posts individual topics are receiving now i’ve looked at it. It would make it easier to read and add to specific topics too. I’ve been oblivious to most of the Elektron posts since being in the wilderness, so have forgotten how the Elektron part works.

I’m still in the watching tutorials stage. I’ve watched half of Cuckoo’s 2 hour long walk through so far and there’s a lot to take in, so i’m not likely to be posting beats against long term users for at least some time, but thanks anyway.

Sure, edited and let’s get nuanced.

I know it’s just vibe, I have some amount of trust that Elektron will give original owners some benefit in shifting prioritization to the 2. Certainly a bugfix update.

While companies talking about some stuff can stir up and inflame entitled GAS-wranglers, I think grown-ups can take their wants into account while ignoring whatever “emotional truth” has them rant-ing over music-ing like someone kicked their dog.

As someone who’s posted on that thread since it’s started (and posted lots of badly mixed WIP and loops and one pattern riffs), I’ve got nothing but positive feedback so certainly don’t hesitate from sharing if you come up with something cool!

If you’re gonna use it on your lap, I’d also consider getting a deck saver and using like this. Never thought of it before but saw this photo this morning and was like 🫨
