I see a lot of people comparing the LD3 to the OT, but it seems much more similar to the Machinedrum no ?
I might pull the trigger on this one… Owners, how are you liking/using it ? It seems like a monster much more capable than modern Elektron boxes.
I had the LD3 , Anamonox in the past and now i have the Urano only.
I can give you some advices and my opinion about Gotharman since its pretty much impossible to try them before, are expensive and they are very particular.
What do you want to know ?
I appreciated the LD3 I had but just never liked the sounds that were in there. I know I can put my own stuff in it, but just did not like the core sound…too rough for me.
Thank you. My main question was about the similarities between the Little Deformer and something like the Machinedrum in terms of sound design. It seems like the Little Deformer is more powerful, but maybe I’m wrong.
Damn, first jam with this little box, felt like this :
I knew this box was crazy, here’s a little snippet, no samples, synthesis only, which is even crazier :
What do you think of the deFormers sequencer? I cant wrap my head around the morph aspect.
I find it much more complex and interesting than Elektron boxes. The sequencer morph and the sound morph are what I like about hardware : to be surprised. I don’t ask questions, I don’t like to understand everything, it’s like with the Torso T1, for me it feels much more alive that way, like a real instrument.
The sound morph is like OT’s crossfader, really cool tool for sound design, and the sequencer morph is great to generate new patterns. For now, I like to morph betwen two different tempos to see what’s going on. The fact that you can copy layers from A to B, or vice versa, to keep some elements the same when you morph, is also really great.
Can someone who knows Gotharman stuff help demystify something for me?
Maybe I’m just slow, but I’m a bit confused about the analog filter boards. I’m reading about it on the LD3 MK2 website ld3_mkii
The signal from this goes into 2 multimode resonant filters (23 filter types, including dual filters for up to 4 filters per voice on the PolyTouch model, and up to 3 on the previous models), and ends up in a VCA.
I read this as 23 filter types are all digital and included by default. Did I get that right?
Up to 4 optional analog filters can also be applied to the audio busses, for real analog processing
I believe these are all the filter boards that are sold separately – is that right? I see several models, like Diode driver, Xtra distortion, Tube filter, Trippple filter, etc.
Are these swappable? Is the idea that you can collect the filter boards and swap them out based on what sound you want, or do you need to have them installed when placing the original order?
If the idea is to have the user swap them as they need different characters, I’m curious if it requires a lot of expertise with hardware, such as soldering or other techniques or special equipment.
Goddammit, now I’m GASing. Joey Blush videos always make me want to buy gear…
Yes they are swappable it’s very simple , just plug the filter card and that’s it.
I have the Urano and Zaturn so let me know if you have any questions about Gotharman .
Awesome! That sounds even more fun than I thought. So you could in theory collect a bunch of filters. Thanks! I might take you up on that and come back with more questions
Yep and some of those filters are amazing imo. I really like the VCF2 filters.
I suggest you read the manual, I know there is a lot to read but Gotharman manual are very well made.
I want to make some videos / demos soon, i just didnt have the time yet.
Yeah it looks good. Only 648 pages too!
Synthesis only, with a little bit of post processing in Bitwig.
Best groovebox ever.
I love these timbres!
@sovietpop (or anyone else who knows this thing) mind if I bug you with a couple more questions? I’m working my way through the manual, but want to make sure I fully understood.
One of my areas of interest with this instrument is frequency modulation of samples:
It sounds like you can FM a sample with another sample, using the bus system – did I get that right?
And if so, is there anything preventing FM-ing a sample with itself? It seems like it would be possible by setting the FM bus to the right bus number, but just wondering if there’s anything in there that checks against the source being itself.
Is filter FM possible with both the digital filters and analog filter boards? I see a whole section on SPAZEboard, but that’s actually not my first choice of analog filter boards – I was thinking of getting the VCF2. I’m wondering if only SPAZE allows filter FM.
Thanks!
Yes, very easy to do. You can even modulate the modulation etc, to simulate some kind of 3, 4, 5 etc operators FM.
You can do that too. That’s even the default behavior of the FM parameter in the edit menu.
